Anger has a purpose as an emotion. If you've been threatened, hurt, or your
situation is an unhappy one, anger can provide the energy and motivation
to move you in directions that improve your life.
However, when you hang on to anger against someone and there isn't direct
and positive action taken as a result, it can become toxic to you.
Allowing negativity to fester within occupies space that could be filled
with peaceful, positive, happy thoughts that liberate you to enjoy your
life. Here are 3 steps to releasing toxic anger at others:
1. Let Yourself Feel It Fully
Note the impact in your body and on your emotional state. Feel it in your jaw, shoulders,
abdomen, and hands. Now, decide to release this anger for your own benefit.
2. Imagine That The Person You Are Angry With Did The Best He Or She Could
With whatever tools she or he had to work with. Some people go through life surviving
with mechanisms that are hurtful toward others, or with inadequate tools for relating
in a meaningful or healthy way. Visualize releasing this person physically into the
universe, to whatever God has in store for him or her.
3. If Negative Emotions Are Presistent, Try Breaking The Cycle Of Thoughts
Imagine a huge red "X" through the negative thoughts, and say "Stop" or "Cancel"
out loud. Consider instead the possible benefits and learning that can arise out
of your experience. Did you learn about yourself? What you want and don't want?
Can you use this experience to be of help to others?
