Some people use coaches because they want someone there that will encourage them and 'push' them to reach their goals.

A coach doesn't have to be certified... however, there are several training programs available that offer accreditation for anyone who wishes to become a certified coach.

Life coaching means having great communication skills, since this is what the business is primarily based on. Good listening skills are also a must for any life coach,

Don't try to offer every service for all people. Instead, focus on one area only...and be the go to person for that specialty!

Tools You Will Need

As with any business a phone line, computer and internet connection will be needed. If you want to become a life coach, you will also need to have contracts for your clients and some questionnaire forms for your clients to fill out before a coaching session.

Another tool you will probably need is payment options; will you be accepting credit cards, paypal, money orders, checks, etc? You need to make sure those tools are set up and ready before hand. A fax line would also be an important part of your business. In order to assess your clients, or prospective clients...you may also want to have a personality profile test available.

Getting Started

The first step in life coaching would be to decide in what area you want to specialize: business, life/personal, relationships, etc.

After you decide what area of expertise... you may wish to take a training program--although as stated above, it isn't necessary to receive accreditation.

Next, you want to have an online presence... by setting up a website and by networking with others.

Get involved in forums and message boards that other coaches frequent so that you can get advice, support and build friendships/relationships with other coaches.

Becoming a coach means marketing yourself. This is also a very important step in getting started. Decide if you are going to market both online and offline.

Also decide what your marketing strategies are going to be. Take your time. Do your research--then begin promoting yourself as an expert in the area of specialty you decided on.

Check out the competition and see what they are offer--then come up with something much better. You want to stand out from the rest of them.

Show confidence and believe in yourself. If you want to become successful in life coaching as a business, you have to put in the time and effort to build the business up.
